Getting Over “The Dip”

Whether you’ve just made partner, you are starting your own firm, or you are jumping the traditional legal ship entirely, Seth Godin says you are going to encounter “The Dip” if you are indeed on the “right” path. I call this your “divinely inspired path”.

Persevering through “difficult” times, filled with learning curves and various challenges, is what separates highly successful people from … well, everyone else.

According to Seth, all ventures experience “the dip” and to be successful you must be able to distinguish a “dip” from a “cul-de-sac” (dead end) or “cliff” (failure disguised as success).

Cul-de-sacs never get better and represent the “dreams” that you need to abandon, most likely because you were never on “your” right path in the first place.

Seth advocates what most people do not … quitting! He also reminds us of the value of quitting when in a cul-de-sac (you’ll never get better) and doing this as frequently as necessary until you are headed in “your” right direction. I agree … if you are not on your divinely inspire path, stop spinning your wheels so that you can find what you are truly meant to be doing with your energy and your life.

Strive to be the best at what you do, and if you cannot, do something else! This could be a simple as changing your practice area, as complex as moving to a new firm, agency or company - or as drastic as leaving the legal professional altogether.

There are no huge, new insights in this short motivatioal book, but instead reminders of how to “quit” successfully. Seth explores the statistical benefits of being one of the best at what you do and how to push through “the dip” to the other side where success resides.

This is a really good book. I highly recommend that you check it out!

J So … get ready for self-discovery and professional growth via our (at least weekly) UpwardAction® SuccessWork segment.

Let’s get started!

UpwardAction® SuccessWork:

Spend no less than 15 minutes today considering if you are in a dip, cul-da-sac- or cliff in your career or business. Here are a few questions to get your started.

1. On your best day, what is most satisfying about your business or career?

2. On your worst day, is your answer to question 1 motivating and inspiring enough to give you comfort about the sacrifices that must be make to reach success?

3. To reach the highest levels of accomplishment in your current career or business, do you need to spend more time (i) getting better at your strengths or (ii) getting significantly better at your weak areas?

Let you answers to these three powerful questions help you determine whether the “challenges” you are (or will be) facing are simply a dip - or if you’re in a cul-da-sac or worse yet - on the cliff.

If you need help using your answers to make a determination, I invite you to sign up for an UpwardAction Introductory Coaching Session.

Expect the best!

Congratulations New Partner … Now what?

Making partner is a big move ~ Congratulations! This is quite an exciting, yet slightly (OK – more than slightly) intimidating accomplishment. Along with partnership comes bigger financial, prestige and other “intangible” rewards but also bigger risks and LOTS more pressure. You may be asking yourself “Now that I’ve made it this far, what do I do next?”

Here are a few steps to help guide your path to accelerated partnership success!

1. Establish (and continuously evaluate and re-evaluate) long term goals. First, take sufficient time to get really clear about what you hope to accomplish professionally, socially and personally in your first 5 years of partnership. Do not shortchange yourself here by planning for less than five years, because anything less is too short. Achieving long-term success and stability at this stage of the game requires that you develop the skill of long-term strategic thinking. Hire an UpwardAction Coach if you need help in this regard. Once your long term goals are clearly defined, determine what it will take to accomplish each goal and create a step by step action plan. Then, group your steps into monthly and weekly objectives.

Although this process may sound like a ton of work, it really is not as burdensome as it appears at first glance. Investing time upfront to chart your path will keep you focused and positioned to achieve great things as a new partner.

2. Reward Yourself

Remember to be good to yourself as you make progress on your path to accelerated partnership success. Use your action plan to identify milestones and then reward yourself for accomplishing each milestone. A reward can be as extravagant as an exotic trip to Thailand or a simple as a free afternoon to read a book or enjoy a conversation with a friend at your local coffee shop.

3. Assess Your Strengths and Weaknesses. You must have an accurate view of your strengths and weaknesses to succeed at this high level of your game. Once you really know where you stand – you are in a position to maximize your strengths and augment your weaknesses. You can also work on developing a rainmaking/connecting style that works for you and not waste time on those that are outside of your interest. For example, if you love speaking , spend your time speaking to and connecting with audiences. Then, write outlines for your articles and commission more junior lawyers to develop articles from the outlines. When working with more junior lawyers, always remember the important of sharing authorship.

Happy Super Tuesday!

Good Morning Fellow Lawyers (law students & friends of the legal field)!

If you live in one of the 22 Super Tuesday states, remember to vote today.   Below are a few general rules that you should have in mind as you head to your local polling location.

  • Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  If you are in line at 8 p.m. , you can vote!
  • You have the right to cast a provisional ballot even if your name is not listed on the voting rolls.
  • If a you are at the wrong polling location and have time to get to the correct polling location before polls close at 8:00 p.m., do it!  If you are out of time, you are allowed to vote with a provisional ballot, even if you are at the wrong location.
  • If you declined to select a political party when you registered to vote, you can still vote for Senator Barack Obama (or any other candidate) if you request a Democratic (or Republican - if you are so inclined) ballot from the poll worker. Make sure you mark “Democratic” or “Republican” as relevant in the appropriate space to ensure that your vote is handled appropriately.
  • You have the right to return a completed vote-by-mail ballot to any precinct in your county.

Happy Voting!
